In association with Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Therapy uses a combination of natural herbs to support the treatment of your condition. Herbs are prescribed in serveral differnt forms: Raw, Powdered, Pill, Tincture & topical.
Since 1971, when New York Times journalist James Reston received acupuncture treatments while on assignment in China, Americans have increasingly found that traditional Chinese medicine is an effective, safe way to heal illnesses and improve their health. With its first medical textbook compiled between 300 B.C.E. and 100 B.C.E., traditional Chinese medicine (or TCM) is one of the oldest, continually documented and practiced medical systems in use today. It has been used side by side with Western medicine since 1958 in mainland China, and is very well-researched there. It has received increasing attention in the West, and there are now numerous schools in the U.S. where practicioners can train.
Unlike western medicine (both herbal and conventional), TCM does not focus on treating symptoms such as runny noses or pain. Instead, TCM treats patterns of imbalance in the body and its systems, using herbs, diet, exercise and acupuncture to restore balance.
A typical session with a TCM practicioner involves a thorough, non-invasive assessment to detect these imbalances. TCM practicioners will ask a number of questions about areas ranging from craving's for snacks to whether you become tired at 10 am or 10 pm, as well as examining your tongue and pulse. The last two are far more thorough than the cursory examination given by a classic MD! You will then be given a customized herbal prescription (which can be picked up from Ke Kino's on-site Chinese Herbal dispensory) which will work to alleviate your symptoms while correcting the underlying imbalance. Acupuncture, while a traditional part of treatment, is not always necessary and if you prefer, you can just receive the herbal treatment.
Not only is the diagnosis in TCM different than in western medicine, but so are the herbal remedies. TCM rarely uses herbal remedies consisting of just one plant. Instead, the practicioner thoughtfully combines various parts of plants to produce a unique prescription that will correct your precise imbalance. While safe, TCM herbal remedies are very powerful, and should be used only after consultation with a trained TCM practicioner who has graduated from an accredited school.
(On occasion some Chinese remedies call for ingredients made from animal origin, so discuss this with the practitioner if it is of concern to you. Substitutes can almost always be found.)
