Reiki is an ancient healing experience. Known and practice by many different cultures, Reiki probably developed before recorded time and changed names as the cultures died out. Most cultures acknowledged the source of this healing power as Spirit, again using many names. Rei means universal or spiritual source. Ki speaks to the life force or energy. Reiki is universal life force in action.
How did it get to modern America?
The system was rediscovered in Japan in the 1890's and brought to America in the 1930's by Hawaya Takata. Mrs. Takata taught Reiki in Hawaii for many years. In the early 1980's, it was brought to California by Barbara Ray PhD. Dr. Ray and Mrs. Takata began teaching Reiki at Stanford Research Institute in California in 1981.
